Thrustmaster T300RS Racing Wheel Review PS4 | $350

Thrustmaster T300RS Racing Wheel Review PS4 | $350

The Thrustmaster T300RS was released in October of 2014. It is a considered a mid priced racing wheel and is comparable to Thrustmaster’s flagship wheel the T500.

The T300 was the first wheel with force feedback to work with the PS4 and also works great on the PS3 and PC.

It’s a great wheel offered by Thrustmaster and is available in 4 different options: The stock T300RS edition (which I will review below), the T300RS Integral edition (which comes with a different rim and a 3 pedal set), the Gran Turismo Edition (GT branded rim and 3 pedal set), and the T300RS Servo Base (which is the wheel base only and then you add the components you want to it.

What You Need To Know About The T300

The Thrustmaster T300 comes with the T300RS wheel base, a stock rim, and a two pedal set. It works natively on the PS4 by flipping a switch and also works on the PS3 and PC. If you run this wheel with the PSVR headset it will create one of the most immersive experiences you have ever had with your PlayStation console.

This is a great wheel to start with and it allows you to add on other Thrustmaster components like a 3 pedal set, a shifter, or a new wheel rim. While the T500 racing wheel defined an era for high-end peripherals on consoles I’m actually more partial to the T300 model.

Thrustmaster T300RS Video Review

This video was recorded prior to racing titles being released on the PS4, but now there are plenty of racing games to use the T300 with.

Strong Build and a Good Quality Racing Wheel

Thrustmaster T300 reviewThe T300 is built with a a really strong wheel base and is a great foundation for a racing setup. The rim is built with a re-enforced rubber grip, that feels strong and comfortable in your hands. The center column is made of brushed metal and has all of your standard Playstation buttons.

The paddle shifters are about 5 inches tall and are made of brushed metal. They make a nice “click” when engaged and quickly spring back to position.

The 2 pedal set is servicable for what it is, but there is no progressive resistance in the brake. The throttle and the brake pedal do vary in there resistance, with the brake being slightly stiffer. The pedals are contained in a plastic base with a non-slip grating.

In action the T300 has very smooth, strong, and extremely quiet force feedback. The wheel feels much lighter in your hands than the T500 and even the vibration seems more controlled.

“This wheel is built pretty tough and while the pedals leave a bit to be desired, the overall package and racing experience is high quality”

Pros vs Cons

Pros

  • 270 to 1080 degrees of rotation adjustable on the fly
  • Easy to upgrade: add on a clutch pedal, and a shifter
  • Wheel does a GREAT job translating the feel of the road and the car
  • Great force feedback delivered smooth and quiet
  • The metal paddle shifters have a nice spring to them
  • The wheel feels lite in your hands and makes it easy to steer
  • Swappable rims (works with all Thrustmaster add-on rims)
  • Plug in and play with the PS4, by flipping a switch

Cons

  • Pedal set is limited and offer no progressive resistance or brake mods
  • Rim is inch smaller than T500 rim, which I wish they used for this
  • Re-enforced rubber rim deadens some of the vibration

Who Should Buy This Steering Wheel

If you are a casual or serious racer looking for a great wheel to start with…this is for you. What makes this a better option than the T150 is that the T300 has a better motor and it allows you to swap out the rim. Overall I think if you were on a set budget than the T300 can get you in the game and then you can upgrade components later. If you are looking for a simulated racing experience and want true force feedback, vibration, 1080 degrees of rotation and a driving system you can upgrade, the T300 is a GREAT place to start.

If you are a racer who pays attention to their lap times and are always trying to move up on the leaderboards, getting a wheel like this is the next logical step in your racing game addiction.

Racing With PSVR on PlayStation 4

Drive Club VR

This is a great wheel to pair with Playstation VR particularly because it has a very nice wheel base that delivers smooth and strong force feedback. With the VR headset on racing is already engaging and immersive, but adding a wheel of this caliber is going to take your experience over the top. Not only will you be able to look into the apex of the turns through the PSVR, but you will also have your wheel delivering resistance into your hands as you try to keep you car on course.

Using a force feedback wheel and pedal set in conjunction with VR is absolutely insane and one of the most simulated experience you could ever get in your own house.

Three Other T300 Package Options

So overall there are 3 ways you can get the T300RS. There is the standard version we are discussing here with the stock rim, but then there are three other package options.

T300RS Servo Base

T300RS Servo BaseYou can buy the servo base by itself and then you can add the exact rim and pedal set you want to go with it. This is the wheel base only and then you would purchase the components separately. I would get that if you were considering getting the T3PA pro pedals.

You can read more about the T300RS Servo Base here.

T300RS Integral Edition

T300Rs Integral EditionThe Integral Edition offers the most consumer value. This package has the T300RS servo base, the T3PA Wide pedal set (Throttle, brake, and clutch, and the Ferrari EVo 599XX rim, which is slightly larger and wrapped in Alcantara from the Ferrari factory.

T300 GT Edition

Gran Turismo WheelThe Gran Tursimo version offers a similar rim to the stock version the only difference is it has Gran Turismo branding.. This package has the T300RS servo base and a variation of the T3PA Wide pedal set (Throttle, brake, and clutch).

T300RS Review Conclusion

Hard to believe I am saying this, but I like this wheel better than the T500, of course the T500 though comes with a much nicer pedal set. This wheel just feels like it maneuvers better in your hands and translates the road and the cars traction better. The two pedal set leaves a lot to be desired and I wish Thrustmaster made this set available with a progressive brake or at least a conical brake mod. Its also much more convenient because it works natively on the PS4, while the T500 doesn’t.

Overall the fact that the T300 is upgradable and works with the Thrustmaster eco-system make it a great value for building out your racing setup in the future. When I first got mine… it was just the stock setup, but overtime I now have multiple rims, the Pro pedal set, and the shifter. I couldn’t be happier with this driving wheel and specifically the quality and performance that the T 300 servo motor provides!

“The T300 was built with a great wheel base that will last a long time and offers plenty of options for upgrading as you get more serious about pimping your racing setup”
The Thrustmaster T300RS is well reviewed at Amazon with over 140 customer reviews and an average of 4.0 stars. I think that is about right for this wheel and I will have to agree with the consumer market on this one!
