Thrustmaster T80 Racing Wheel Review PS4 | $100

Thrustmaster T80 Racing Wheel Review PS4 | $100

The Thrustmaster T80 Steering Wheel was released in June of 2014 for PlayStation consoles. It is considered an entry level racing wheel and is available in an officially licensed Playstaion version and at one time was available in a DriveClub version.

The T80 provides gamers an immersive racing experience that a standard dual shock controller just can’t provide on the PS4 and its one of the most inexpensive wheels available, but…

There is definitley some things you need to know about it before you consider purchasing one.

What You Need To Know About This Low Priced Thrustmaster Wheel

This is a starter wheel if you are looking to get into PlayStation racing, but it lacks the functionality and size of the mid to higher end wheels. It is an ok purchase considering the price, especially with it’s straight forward plug in and play connectivity. The wheel was designed for the PS4, but is compatible with the PS3. This is also a popular choice for people playing DriveClub VR with the PSVR headset, simply because it’s cheap and adds even more immersion to your virtual racing. If you are looking for a better experience than racing with a controller, but don’t want to fork out the money for something more advanced, the T80 is an option, but there are better options like the T150

T80 Specs

Racing wheel and 2 pedal set, 240 degrees of rotation, adjustable wheel sensitivity, bungee cord system (linear resistance) that creates a Center Spring Effect feel, table clamp, Native PS4 compayiblity allows for navigation in the UI, rim is 11 inches (28 cm) in diameter, rim is plastic with rubber grips, 2 plastic mounted paddle shifters, 11 action buttons (4 on the wheel rim) and a D-pad, Pedals: Throttle and brake with angle adjustment for each pedal.

Low End Build, But Quality That Should Last

Thrustmaster T80 ReviewThe T80 is a bit toyish. It is really lite weight and feels small in your hands. Most of it is comprised of plastic and has the feel of an inexpensive racing wheel. Im not a fan of the PlayStation branding, but its certainly something that you can live with. The wheel motor is encased in plastic and overall the wheel and motor are fairly light weight.

The two pedal set is plastic as well, but does offer some adjustability with moving the spacing of the pedal plates to your preference. The brake has a built in progressive resistance that simulates brake pressure. There is no adjusability in the brake pressure or ability to adjust the throw distance of wither pedal. The foot rest is also plastic and has a textured surface to help your feet grip it.

The bungee cord resistance system does not create true force feedback and instead provides linear resistance. It does however auto center which is a nice feature and you can adjust the sensitivity of the linear feedback.

“While I don’t love this wheel, it’s not a bad choice if you are looking to spend under $100 and Thrustmaster is a solid brand”

Racing With The T80 Steering Wheel on a PS4

The bungee cord system while providing resistance doesn’t give you a truly simulated feel. It does pull back to center when you are cornering which definitely will help you be more efficient through turns, but from a sim racing feel…it kind of feels dead in your hands. Teh motor also doesn’t provide any vibration so you really don’t get a sense of the terrain and how your car is reacting to the road.

With PSVR it feels a little bit better because you are using more of your senses and not relying solely on the racing wheel for immersion. Its better than a controller for sure, but it is not gonna knock your socks and make you feel like a race car driver…you need vibration, a higher range of rotation degrees, and true force feedback to get that sim racing type effect.

Who Should Buy The T80 Thrustmaster Wheel

If you are just looking for an option better than a controller to play your PS racing games with than the T80 is worth considering. This wheel is for an entry level racer, someone who plays PS4 or PS3 racing games casually and wants more than a controller, or someone who wants to eventually get into a more serious setup and currently lacks the budget.

PSVR Racing Games

If you have a PSVR and are looking to create some immersion with VR racing games like DriveClub, then this Thrustmaster steering wheel isn’t to bad, but again I do stress its a bit more for the casual racer. If you consider yourself a more serious racer, take a look at the T150, which has many more features and the ability to upgrade your pedal set and add a shifter.

Is the T80 Better than the Hori 4

For me its a toss up. There are pros and cons to both of these products. While the Hori 4 wheel has vibration and the T80 doesn’t, the T80 has a larger diameter rim which makes a big difference in the way the wheel feels in your hands. Both wheels are pretty equal in terms of what you will get from a racing experience.

PS4, PS3

This is wheel does not allow for additional pedals or shifters to be added.

Mounting the T 80

Desk or table clamp mount only. The pedals can be hard mounted as they have pre-drilled holes, but the wheel can not. You can put these pedals on carpet, but you will need to find a way to lock them down so they don’t move when you are jamming on the brake.

1 year warranty US and 2 years in some European countries.

Playstation 4 T80 Steering Wheel Review Conclusion

For a starter wheel, this wheel isn’t a bad given the price, but lacks many of the features that I would look for in an entry level wheel. All things considered one level up is the T150 which is a much stronger option, but again it comes with a higher price. If you are just looking to lose the controller and start playing with a wheel then this or the Hori 4 steering wheel are worth considering because…

“…racing with a wheel will definitely ramp up your immersion, by putting your body in a racing position”
While the wheel does have it’s flaws, I do like that the brake offers progressive resistance and there is a linear resistance bungee cord system that at least offers some pull back when you turn. The wheel has over 100 reviews at Amazon with a 3.5 star rating. I have to agree most of the customer reviews on the T80…great entry level wheel for the price, but plays a bit like a toy.
